In the Movie Business, reality is a rare commodity. Very rarely can a director overcome the urge to glamorize a subject and hide the reality that is contained within. For some, there is no shame in making a movie a far cry from what is real. For others, it is a crime to make a movie that is devoid of truth and somehow try to make the characters and events that are shown seem better than they actually are. I make the argument that it is much harder to make the latter.

Requiem for a Dream is a brilliant movie that shows how drugs cause four characters lives to spiral downward. It shows their hopes and their dreams, and then it tells a graphic and real story of how their dreams eventually die. It is a moving depiction of the horrible consequences of drug addiction and is ironically so depressing that it becomes uplifting. The depths the characters sink to, causes you to be nothing less than exuberant about your present life and situation.
